Safari and Salt is a culmination of four generations of passionate safari pioneers in Africa. It all started with my great grand-father who was born on an ox-wagon as they migrated into the wildlands of Zimbabwe. My grandparents continued the legacy by establishing one of Zimbabwe’s largest wild-game reserves. My mother and father continued in this love for wildlife protection and conservation with their work as professional safari guides before developing safari properties in some of the most remote corners of southern Africa. African exploration is in our blood.
My sister and I were privileged enough to enter the safari industry at a young age. We spent our childhood on safari between Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana etc. as my parents operated mobile safaris. Our childhoods consisted of feeding & making friends with orphaned animals such as Chewy the leopard and Tusker one of three baby elephants whose mother was taken by poachers. We made dolls out of kigelia ‘sausage tree’ pods that kept us entertained for weeks out in the bush. I was bathed in a bucket by the side of a massive Unimog truck while my mother stood guard with a gun, making sure no lions crept up on us.
We often slept by the fire at night, out under the stars. I was taught from a young age to respect wildlife and the environment – the bush was always in my blood. My first word was not in English, but in Ndebele: “uXakuxaku”, meaning “snot apple tree”, whose fruit was my favourite.’
Our childhood was wild and untamed in the best kind of way. And I am forever grateful for this upbringing as it nurtured my spirit and taught me the importance of protecting these animals and their fragile habitats, which is at the forefront of our purpose-driven safaris at Safaris & Salt.
Later in life having lived in both Africa & Mauritius, we identified two parts of the planet that are a match-made in heaven and designed our family-run travel concierge around the special concept of ‘bush & beach’ safaris.
