Namibia

Damaraland, Etosha, Skeleton Coast & Sossusvlei

ABOUT NAMIBIA

A popular family holiday destination growing up in Africa, we often retreated here between June & October when the desert is cooler. Landing in Windhoek is always a spectacle and a journey back in time to dusty roads, donkeys and barren, deserted old buildings & bars. A very small Germanic-style town with little water. You often stay here overnight before embarking on your safari.

Sossusvlei is my favorite area of Namibia, you cannot visit the country without ticking this region off. Home to the highest sand dune in Africa. Sandboarding down the dunes is particularly amusing as well as e-biking through the desert and enjoying a sunset on the rock kopjes in complete silence and seclusion.

Namibia is incredibly safe and the terrain so flat & dry that it makes the road accessible & easy to get around. This is  the top destination for self-drive safaris. Hire a car as you arrive in Windhoek Airport and explore the country at your own pace. This makes it especially appealing for families with younger children.

Skeleton Coast, named for the whale bones and eerie shipwrecks that line the coast where the Atlantic meets the Desert. They call it ‘the largest cemetery in the world’ due to all the crew that lost their lives out here when the thick fog came over and they lost direction. Well-known for its incredible numbers of Cape seals that line the coast as well as elephant and desert lion. It is breathtaking to encounter wildlife in such a lonely, desolate location on earth.

One of the most remote corners of Africa is considered the Kunene River Region in Namibia on the border to Angola. I will never forget my experience meeting the semi-nomadic, pastoralist Himba tribe here that wear cow skins & paint their bodies & hair in red ochre & butterfat to protect from the sun and dry conditions. A fascinating tribe and strong customs they have kept intact despite the modernization of the country.
